About The Partner

EDGELAND is a landscape architecture firm focused on creating meaningful outdoor spaces that connect people and communities.

For Hilda L. Solis Community Park in El Monte, California, the team sought thoughtfully designed site furnishings that balanced functionality, user experience, and project-specific needs.

The Challenge

Selecting site furnishings for public parks involves balancing design intent, functionality, and budget. For Hilda L. Solis Community Park, the design team faced a specific challenge: finding a swing bench that would provide the desired seating experience while limiting its swinging radius within the park.

The team needed a product that would meet its budget requirements while addressing the practical considerations of swing movement and potential pinch points.

These requirements made the bench's suspension design an important factor in selecting the right product for the project.

The Solution

Following a recommendation from Spruce & Gander, the EDGELAND team explored the Langdon Swing Bench by Thomas Steele and recognized its potential to meet the project's needs.

A distinguishing feature was the bench's rod suspension system, which offered an alternative to traditional chain connections. The design team particularly appreciated how these attachments helped control the range of swinging motion while minimizing pinch points.

"The rod attachments made a huge difference, providing a natural governor on swinging radius and minimizing pinch points for site users."                                  - Andrew Schlesinger, EDGELAND

Beyond the product's design, collaboration played an important role in developing a solution suited to the park. The team worked closely with Thomas Steele to discuss modifications, mounting options, and other project-specific details.

"We met several times with the Thomas Steele team to chat through design tweaks to the Langdon bench, mounting options, and other details specific to our project. These calls helped to ensure custom details that worked for our project."

Ongoing communication throughout the process helped coordinate the requested product details and keep the project moving toward its anticipated installation timeline.

The Results

The finished Langdon Swing Bench provided Hilda L. Solis Community Park with a thoughtfully designed seating solution that addressed the team's functional requirements while delivering the quality craftsmanship they expected.

Ongoing communication and submittal reviews throughout the project gave the design team confidence in the manufacturing and installation timeline. Ultimately, the project received enthusiastic feedback from the client.

"The client ended up loving the project! The Langdon Bench ended up providing to be a true win for Hilda L. Solis Community Park." - Andrew Schlesinger, EDGELAND
